Determine your hair type
The first thing to do is figure out what type of hair you have. If the ends tend to split easily, frizz or if it lacks shine and luster, you most likely have dry hair. Color treated hair tends to be the most fragile. Overuse of appliances such as hair dryers, flat irons and curling irons can contribute to the problem of poor hair health. Normal and oily hair types are less at risk for damage, but still need proper care.
Choose the best hair dryer for the job
The best hair dryers are those, which have a range of temperature and air, flow settings. The more control that you have over the amount of heat and air flow, the better. Placing the dryer on low and cooler settings will help to protect your hair from drying out and burning, especially if it tends to be dry.
Prepare your hair in advance
When you wash your hair, use a good shampoo that is formulated for your specific hair type. Make sure that all of the shampoo is rinsed out because it can cause a dulling of the hair and dryer if not completely removed. After washing, use a protective conditioner or treatment to prepare your hair for drying. Some types, such as those that contain silicone actually wrap around the hair shaft and provide a protective coating that lessens the impact of curling irons and hair dryers. After your hair has been prepped, brush or comb it out, working from the ends upward. Avoid pulling or stretching the hair while you’re brushing it because it can cause a weakening of the hair shaft, making it more susceptible to damage. If you have stubborn knots or tangles, you may want to consider using a detangler,
Excessive split ends can be an issue when using hair dryers. It is best to have split ends trimmed regularly. The reason for this is that hair dryers, causing the split to travel up the shaft of the hair, can worsen splits in the hair. Healthy hair that is free from split ends fares much better in the drying process.
Proper use of the hair dryer
Choose the best setting for your hair type. If your hair tends to be dry, is bleached or color treated, low heat and airflow settings are recommended. It may take a little longer to get dry, but in the long run it is worth the extra few moments to protect the health of your hair. Keep the dryer several inches from the hair. Gently move the hair with fingers and move the dryer around all areas of the hair so the heat and air is not applied to any one spot for extended periods of time. This will give you a uniform drying without placing too much stress on a particular spot.
Should you use a hair dryer?
The only time that it is unsafe to use a hair dryer is when your hair is in such delicate condition that it would cause more damage. Yes, there are times when a hair dryer should be avoided, particularly if your hair is dry, brittle, subject to frequent breakage and splitting. Under most conditions, if you prepare your hair and use a hair dryer properly, this convenient tool is perfectly safe.
