There are plenty of people that have made the mistake of not thinking about camping safety prior to going on camping trips. Camping is something that the majority of people assume is easy to organize, and further more that not much can go wrong. However that is not always the case, there is a lot of scope for things to go wrong when people go camping. Being organized and fully prepared can make all the difference in being able to cope with the unexpected. These camping safety tips are guidance to help you avoid the dangers and risks that can ruin any camping trip.

1. First and foremost get yourself organized before you go camping. Being organized can make all the difference between being ready for the unexpected and not being able to respond to any emergency situation. Basically a lot of things can go wrong on camping trips if you do not take the time to get organized properly before going and stay organized during your camp. To start with make a list of things that have to be taken such as tents, food, drink, equipment, and clothes suitable for the events that have been planned.

2. It is sensible to pick your campsite carefully so you know what to expect when you get there, and work out potential risks for the site. Make sure that the terrain is suitable for putting tents on, and therefore not markedly prone to flooding, fires, or landslides. Check out how hard or soft the ground is, and if there is anything that would prevent the tents from staying up. The ground could differ if the weather has been drier or wetter than normal for the time of year you will be going camping in.

3. Make sure that the camping site has access to clean and safe drinking water. Access to enough water is vital to everyone’s health so ensure that you do not run out of water. Unclean water could make everyone in your camping group ill, and possibly unable to look after themselves. Check to see if there is anything that can get into the water supply, and if there is stop it from doing so. If you have doubts about the quality of drinking water ensure that you are able to boil it before drinking it.

4. Have a look around the campsite to see if there are any natural dangers in the area. For example, watch out for bears, snakes, dangerous spiders, and wasps. Basically animals that can injure you and others in your group, or that can cause more serious injuries, or threats to safety.

5. Take a look at the weather forecast before you go, and keep checking it once you are camping. Doing so could mean that you plan for the worst even when hoping for the best. For instance, if the forecast is for snow pack more warm clothes and be prepared to light more camp fires. If hot weather is predicted then take more sunscreen and plan to obtain more water and drinks. Plus in heat waves take extra care to put out all fires to lower the risk of bush fires.

6. Before you go brush up on how to use camping equipment properly. Refresh your knowledge of lighting fires, putting up tents, as well as how to use knives and axes safely.
